AVENEL MERINO STUD was founded in 1974 and bloodlines from this stud have enjoyed many successes in wether trials from the Queensland border at Mungindi, to Victoria and South Australia.  Avenel was one of the first studs in the Riverina to commence an on-property Ram Sale and this year will be its 33.

In conjunction with the Merino Stud, Ken McCrabb has been personally servicing clients as classer and adviser for many years.  At one point in time Ken was classing 80 clients some of whom were buying rams from other studs who needed Ken to class their flocks and help them select rams. Colin McCrabb has now taken on these clients to make sure that they continue to be “looked after”.

FERTILITY IS THE KEY TO PROFITABILITY

At Avenel we concentrate on breeding highly fertile ewes with a milking capacity to successfully rear twins. Our sheep now have longer, plainer bodies producing long stapled free growing white wool with nourishment which keeps out dust and shows marked resistance to fleece rot.

Please refer to our 2010 brochure (below) which details performance of our ewes when agisted on mulga country in south west Queensland. A ewe fleece of 10.5 months growth won Champion Red Country fleece at the 2009 Cunnamulla Show.

Historically our sheep have also performed well in the higher rainfall regions to our South and East and will continue to excel under our current direction.

Introduction of Avenel rams to fine wool flocks often produces quite staggering results with remarkable increase in clean fleece weight with minimal broadening of microns and no fleece-rot problems.
